What it's for

Alive publication is an open access scientific work published on the Internet, which is constantly being developed and improved by its author. Due to their obvious advantages, alive publications are gaining more and more followers every year.

••• Authors who have abandoned the traditional, static publication in favor of an alive one find themselves in a new, much more comfortable and productive environment. The serious errors and typos made are no longer fatal, nor do they haunt them for the rest of the life. The circle of readers of an alive publication is much wider. Interest in it often even increases over time: many readers return to their favorite text from time to time, not only to refresh their memory of the most significant moments, but also to find out how the author's views are transformed and what new trends the author noticed in this field.

••• For the reader, an alive publication is undoubtedly preferable to a static one. Indeed, how much more confident you feel when you know that the text in front of your eyes is under the constant control of the author, who has carefully corrected all the errors and inaccuracies noticed since the first publication of the work online, as well as he is constantly monitoring changes taking place in this branch of science.

How to distinguish an alive publication from a static one? Just adding a special "Publication declared alive" icon to its web view is obviously not enough. After all, the author could once put this icon and forget about it and about his online text for good. Therefore, the only reliable evidence of an alive publication is the up-to-date time of its last revision. This time is placed high on the web page and serves as a reliable guidance for the reader.

However, it is desirable that an alive publication can be noticed earlier back when you look at the reference leading to it. How, for example, can a reader viewing a bibliographic list distinguish an alive publication included in it from neighboring traditional publications? This can be done by adding a construction of the form ≈2020-03-21≈ edition, where the characters ≈ frame the date of the last revision.

Of course, in this case it is desirable that the latest date which is of the most interest to the reader is inserted into this construction automatically. After all, it is hardly possible even for an extremely conscientious author to constantly review bibliographic lists in their online articles in order to repeatedly correct the changing dates of the last edition of the alive publications found there.

Here the tools to support alive publication come to the rescue. On the pages of our website you will learn,

••• how the author of an alive publication can set the date of the last revision so that this date is available not only directly to the reader, but also to other online articles that refer to it, and

••• how the author of an online article can reference to an alive publication so that the date of its last revision is automatically updated there with every new reader’s visit.
